Best-selling author Patricia Cornwell is pleased that a film based on her Kay Scarpetta character finally appears headed to the big screen after years of failed attempts.

Angelina Jolie is expected to star in the movie, which won’t be based on the books but instead will be an origin story focusing on a younger Scarpetta before she became the steely medical examiner she is in today’s books, the Los Angeles Times says. It’ll be set in present day, not in the late 1980s, when the book series began.

Cornwell said Jolie “had pithy things to say about what she wanted to do. she was direct and goal-oriented,” when the two met to discuss the project last spring on the set of “Salt,” Jolie’s spy thriller opening this summer.

Cornwell was impressed with the actress’s demeanor. “She waited on everyone, getting them their lunch, while her own staff was seated,” Cornwell told the Times. “She was aware intuitively how other people were feeling and wanted to make them comfortable. It was not typical for people of her stature.

“Usually, it’s all about them,” the author said.

Production on the Scarpetta film could begin as early as next fall, the Times said.
