Test: The strength of the Tea Party movement in the Republican Party

Where: Kentucky Senate primary between Republicans Rand Paul and Trey Grayson

Why: Paul, a doctor-turned-candidate, is strongly backed by the Tea Party movement, the national “Paul Revolution” movement born in his father’s presidential campaign two years ago. Grayson, the Kentucky Secretary of State, is backed by the most powerful figure in the state’s GOP establishment, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Test: Are the old “Reagan Democrats” shifting back to the GOP?

Where: Special congressional election in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Why: The special election to replace the late Rep. Jack Murtha is a bellwether. Gov. Bill Halter, who is aided by an endorsement from MoveOn.org. in Pennsylvania, party-switcher Arlen Specter faces Democrat-for-life Joe Sestak, who eschews ideological labels but bashes Specter for his longtime loyalty to former President George W. Bush. these primaries will go a long way in determining whether Democrats will purge their party of lawmakers willing to cross party lines on occasion.

Test: The clout of President Obama’s endorsement in Democratic primaries

Where: African-American voters in Arkansas and the Philadelphia area.

Why: Arlen Specter is counting on Philadelphia’s Democratic machine to deliver a large turnout (and strong support for him) among African American voters, who have consistently opposed him during his 45 years as a Republican. His secret weapon: An endorsement by President Obama. We’ll see just how much Obama’s wishes transfer to the ballot box. The same is true in Arkansas, where Blanche Lincoln is hoping that Obama’s support will give her a solid margin among African American voters, many of whom oppose her more conservative positions on economic issues.

Test: The power of Sarah Palin’s endorsement in a Republican primary

Where: Kentucky

Why: The Paul-Grayson race features another political subtext: Palin vs. Cheney. The former Alaska governor has put her prestige on the line for the populist outsider. Cheney, the former vice president, favors a very conservative political insider. Cheney’s endorsement of Kay Bailey Hutchison seems to have had little impact in the Texas gubernatorial primary. We’ll see if Cheney has any more clout in Kentucky.

This is the first test of a Palin endorsement in a contested Senate primary. another one is coming up next month in California, where the 2008 VP nominee has stumped for former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.

GLENN: I’ll give you the story on the FCC here in just a second, and this is important. I can’t tell you the things that I’m working on now because we’re not always just among friends and I don’t ever want to give them an upper hand on where I’m headed as a business and as somebody who is working to expose the corruption in this country. but one of the things that I did last year was start Insider Extreme and it was a step in the direction to be able to make sure that no matter, they try to shut me down on television, shut me down on radio, shut me down on Internet, shut me down in books, shut me down on stage. They have a lot of work in front of them. I keep all of my options open. They have already — the last time I spoke was two weeks ago. I was in, I was in Tyler, Texas and the venue that was there the night before at 10:00 at night, the inspectors came, health inspectors. it was about 10:00 at night. According to the venue, it was about 10:00 at night and he turns on the water and he notices that the water is down. within ten minutes there was a knock on his door at the venue during a concert. it was a health inspector. I said, we’re just here for a quick inspection, walk into the bathrooms, turn on the water and say, I notice that you don’t have any water, we’re going to have to shut you down; can we see where your water pumping station is. They took back to the back of the building. They made an error, at least in the way he tells it, they made an error because the health inspector said, “Show us your pumping station.” he brings them back and the guy with the health inspector says, “Yes, I noticed that a couple of days ago, that those knobs were turned.” Sorry, you noticed what? Hmmm? I thought you didn’t know where the pumping station — you were here on the property and you were looking at the — what was that? Hmmm? 10:00 at night. I speak the next afternoon. They tried to close them down. said, you are not licensed to do anything now this weekend, and I’m sorry, but we’re closed and you can get a renewal license on Monday morning. he said, well, I’ve got a big event happening here. I’ve got 6,000 people coming tomorrow. I’m sorry, you are not going to be able to do it. “Well, I guess you are going to have to fine me then because I’m doing it anyway.” he said he’s under tremendous heat. He’s bringing in conservative speakers.

It’s happening. It’s nudge. It’s nudge. a little here, a little there. but they are doing it now with the Internet, and here’s what they are announcing today.

PAT: Mr. Genachowski, the FCC chairman, is expected today to outline his plan for regulating broadband lines. he wants to adopt Net neutrality rules that require Internet providers like Comcast and AT&T to treat all traffic equally and not to slow or block access to websites, but it also gives them all the power to regulate the Internet and that’s, that’s what this is all about. this is not about speeding up your broadband.

GLENN: this is about — the people who are behind Net neutrality are free press, and I’m trying to remember. Stu, do you remember what Free Press’ slogan is? It’s like —

STU: Not off the top of my head.

GLENN: Change the Internet or Net —

PAT: Transform society, something like —

GLENN: Transform democracy.

PAT: Transform democracy.

GLENN: it was change the Internet and transform democracy, or something like that. this again is about transformation, and they are all the usual suspects. Everybody who is supporting this are the usual suspects. this is the group of radicals. And the radicals are inside the FCC. I know these things to be true because we have sources inside the FCC who are afraid to speak out publicly, and I don’t want them to because they are better on the inside than they are on the outside. yes, that’s right, FCC. There are people inside that don’t agree with you. but what’s the problem with that? Isn’t that what Cass Sunstein says? that the government agents should be able to infiltrate groups that disagree? you shouldn’t have a problem with that. I hope you don’t look over your shoulder.

Hidden deep in a Russian forest, and guarded by soldiers withorders to shoot intruders on sight, the medical researchlaboratories on the outskirts of Moscow were one of the SovietUnion’s best-kept secrets.

So the carefully-vetted journalists who were allowed past theforbidding perimeter fence on a cold February morning in 1954 wereboth apprehensive and curious about what lay ahead. Led to acourtyard outside an austere brick building, they waited in thebright winter sunshine to find out why they had been summoned. Fora few minutes, only the sound of birdsong and the rustling ofleaves filled the air but then a door slowly opened to revealexperimental surgeon Vladimir Demikhov – accompanied by thestrangest looking animal they had ever seen.

Blinking unhappily in the daylight as Demikhov paraded it on itslead, this unfortunate beast had been created by grafting the headand upper body of a small puppy on to the head and body of afully-grown mastiff, to form one grotesque creature with two heads.The visitors watched in horror and fascination as both of thebeast’s mouths lapped greedily at a bowl of milk proffered byDemikhov’s assistants.

Resembling something dreamed up by Mary Shelley’s DrFrankenstein, it seemed literally incredible. But as the Sovietpropaganda machine informed the world, this canine curiosity wasboth very real – and a scientific triumph.

As revealed in a National Geographic documentary to be screenedlater this month, the creation of the two-headed dog was the firststep in an astonishing race by cold War scientists to achieve theseemingly impossible – the first ever human head transplant. Inpursuing this medical goal, Vladimir Demikhov – and his Americanrival, Robert White – may seem to be the epitome of immoralscientists who ignored all ethical considerations in their pursuitof scientific advance. But in their own minds, they were brilliantpioneers prepared to think the unthinkable for the greater good ofmankind.

Whichever view you take, they cannot simply be dismissed asgruesome fantasists for, as the programme warns, the obstacleswhich held them back from their ultimate goal are fast being erodedby modern science, and we may have to confront the reality of thefirst human head transplant much sooner than we care to think.

Although the world’s first face transplant has already takenplace, the notion of taking the head of one person and transferringit to the body of another still seems far-fetched. But back in theFifties, despite being utterly incredible to many, it was a branchof science pursued by some of the most respected doctors of theday.

A Soviet hero, Vladimir Demikhov was renowned for his work inthe Red Army hospitals during World War II. when peace came, hejoined an elite team of Russian doctors ordered by Stalin to beatthe West in the field of medicine at any cost. Labouring far frominquisitive eyes in a secret research complex outside Moscow andexperimenting freely in his search for new ways of prolonging life,Demikhov was prepared to go where others did not dare.

He believed for example that it was possible to transplantorgans like hearts and lungs in human beings. In those days, such aprocedure seemed scarcely credible – but Demikhov proved it couldbe done. Often preferring to work in the dead of night, he showedthat the heart and lungs could be taken from one dog and survive inthe chest of another.

This laid the groundwork for such landmark operations as thefirst heart transplant, conducted by South African surgeon DrChristiaan Barnard, nearly 20 years later. But Demikhov didn’t stopthere.

He was determined to prove that any human organ couldbe successfully transplanted, even the brain. to that end, he setabout the challenge to create a two-headed dog.

The lights of his laboratory shone into the small hours of thatFebruary morning in 1954 as he and his team set about the intricatetask of stitching the upper half of the puppy to the larger animaland connecting their blood vessels and windpipes.

As dawn approached, they waited to see if their creation wouldregain consciousness. Their first sign of success came when thepuppy’s head woke up and yawned. it was quickly joined by thelarger ‘natural’ head of the mastiff, which gave its new addition apuzzled look and tried to shake it off.

The composite dog was ready to be revealed to the world. Thoughit had no body of its own, the smaller animal’s head was reportedto have kept its own personality, remaining as playful as any otherpuppy, according to Soviet propaganda.

Even the American magazine Time reported the experiment withgrudging admiration, describing how the puppy’s head alternatelygrowled and snarled with mock ferocity, or licked the hand thatcaressed it.

“The host-dog was bored by all this but soon became reconciledto the unaccountable puppy that had sprouted out of its neck,”their correspondent wrote. “When it got thirsty, the puppy also gotthirsty. when the laboratory grew hot, both host-dog and puppypanted to cool off.”

After six days, the bizarre hybrid died. But it had survivedlong enough to worry America, which was desperate to outdo theSoviets in all aspects of science and technology.

Soon the U.S. had a radical transplant programme of its own, ledby Robert White, a brilliant and ambitious brain surgeon who, likeDemikhov, had seen active service in World War II. In the SouthPacific, he had see many men paralysed from the neck down and hewas fired with a determination to help these paraplegics live moreproductive lives. following Demikhov’s triumph with the two-headeddog, the American government helped Dr White establish a brainresearch centre at the county hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. by day,he performed surgery on people with all kinds of brain injuries andillnesses, but away from his clinics, animals were the focus of hisattention.

One key experiment Dr White carried out in 1964 involvedremoving the brain – though not the head – from one dog and sewingit under the neck skin of another dog.

With its blood vessels connected to those of the host-dog, DrWhite managed to keep the isolated brain alive for days, provingnot only that the brain could survive away from its own body butthat it was immunologically sound – meaning that, unlike a kidney,it could be transplanted without the likelihood of the new ‘body’rejecting it.

This was a great breakthrough, but it posed much biggerquestions. did a brain isolated in this way still have the power ofthought? Could it in any way be described as ‘conscious’?

Since the transplanted brain had no means of expressing itself,Dr White could not answer this question and he seemed to havereached an impasse. But in 1966 he received help from a mostunexpected direction.

With Stalin long dead, and the USSR creeping towards economicand technological collaboration with the West, Soviet scientistsinvited him to visit their laboratories and operating theatres.

During his trip, White learned of new Soviet experiments, inwhich a severed dog’s head had been kept ‘alive’, not by stitchingit onto another dog’s body, but using special life-supportmachinery. most remarkable of all, the isolated head had continuedto show signs of consciousness – its eyes blinking in response tolight, and ears pricking at the tap of a hammer on the cases it wasin.

This inspired White to take Demikhov’s original two-headed dogexperiment a stage further: not merely grafting one animal’s headon to another’s body, but completely replacing one animal’s headwith another.

This highly complicated operation took White three years to planand he knew many people would find it morally repugnant. But in thelate afternoon of March 14, 1970, he went ahead with the world’sfirst true head transplant, using two rhesus monkeys.

Decapitating both animals, the surgeon successfully managed tostitch the head of one monkey on to the body of the other. he andhis team then faced a nervous wait until finally the ‘hybrid’monkey regained consciousness, opened its eyes and tried to bite asurgeon who put a finger in its mouth.

The team clapped and cheered as their creation moved its facialmuscles, followed their movements with its eyes and even drank froma pipette. But though White regarded the operation as a majorsuccess, he knew it had one major limitation.

Because its spinal cord had been severed as part of theoperation, the monkey was paralysed from the neck down and it wasimpossible for the surgeons to reconnect the hundreds of millionsof nerve threads necessary for it to regain any bodilymovement.

Still, White insisted that such surgery might help a veryparticular kind of human patient – those paraplegics who facedimminent death because their heads were trapped on bodies failingdue to the long-term medical complications which often accompanyextensive paralysis.

With a head transplant, these people, he reasoned, would remainparaplegic but their new bodies, ‘donated’ by patients who werebrain dead but otherwise physically healthy, would give them a newchance of life. White never got a chance to pursue this idea. Whenhe went public with the results of his monkey head transplants twoyears after the event, it earned him only universalcondemnation.

Shunned by the scientific establishment and threatened byanti-vivisectionists, he was forced to seek police protection forhimself and his family and was denied funding for his work. he wentfrom pioneer to pariah.

Despite the controversy caused by his research, he remainsconvinced to this day that head transplants for humans may one daybe viable. And only now, 35 years after his first experiments onmonkeys, does it seem that science may be about to prove himright.

Last year, researchers at University College, London, announcedplans to inject the spinal cords of paralysed patients with stemcells taken from the human nose.

These are cells capable of regenerating themselves and adaptingto many different purposes within the body and it is hoped theymight create a ‘bridge’ between the disconnected ends of the spinalnerves, enabling paralysed patients to regain full control of theirbodies.

If severed spinal cords can be restored in this way, perhapshead transplants might eventually become a scientific possibility -without leaving the unfortunate ‘patient’ permanently paralysed.Whether such operations would ever be deemed ethical is anothermatter – and the psychological and emotional implications simplybeggar belief.

But we live in an age when French surgeons have already carriedout a partial face transplant, and in which British surgeon DrPeter Butler has been granted permission by the Royal Free Hospitalin North London to perform the first complete face transplant inthe near future.

Will a full head transplant be the next question for medicalethicists to consider? It’s a prospect that raises many disquietingquestions, not least whether our souls reside in our minds or inour bodies, and whether a person’s head, living on another body,would still be the same person.

One thing’s for certain. with surgical techniques improving atsuch a rapid rate, the issue will shortly be not whether wecould carry out a human head transplant, but, much moreimportantly, whether we should.

Viewing this as a perversion instead of a tremendous achievement of mankind is no different than people in primitive societies, or in our own history, treating almost any scientific advancement as heresy. It’s sad to see that even in these supposedly enlightened times, we have a medieval mentality at work trying to limit scientific freedom (see stem cell research).

If I was so repulsed about the prospect of head transplantation whilst only reading about it, imagine how horrified the grafted head would feel on waking to look down and see someone elses body attached to it! The depravity of the scientific community knows no bounds, as respect for the sanctity of human life is now completely destroyed, perverted by man’s utter contempt for God and His creation. it is easy to see why man, left to his own devices, devoid of moral absolutes, can create only a hell on earth. we are well on our way. some might argue we have already arrived.

This article makes me feel sick to my stomach. What on earth are they doing? I cannot articulate the revulsion I felt when reading this. it is too disgusting to contemplate a dog with two heads let alone a head transplant on a human being. I fervently wish that stop this before it goes too far. I cannot imagine the psychological and emotional trauma caused to someone who experienced this, let alone the experience for the patient’s family.

This issue reminds me of an old episode from Star Trek. I believe it was entitled “Spocks Brain” where his brain was totally removed and kept on life support. it addresses some of the issues of the article in detail.

National Geographic to air program on head transplants. This is a MUST read

Robin Hood was no match for Tony Stark at the box office this weekend as the superhero sequel “Iron Man 2” easily held on to the top spot for the second weekend in a row. with Robert Downey Jr. staying on top, Russell Crowe and pals had to settle for a good, but not strong, second place finish for the weekend. this result wasn’t exactly shocking since the tin man had debuted with a year-best $128 million opening last week and was expected to hold on to at least half of its audience. Also opening this weekend to numbers in line with early predictions were the romances “Letters to Juliet” and “Just Wright.” overall, the box office was a tad better than the cumulative total of the top ten performers from this very frame last year.

Despite falling a hefty 59% from its powerful opening weekend, no newcomers were good enough to rob “Iron Man 2” (Movie Review) off its box office crown. The Marvel/Paramount release took in a strong $53 million for the weekend which raises its overall box office to a sizzling $212 million. in comparison, after ten days, its predecessor, “Iron Man,” had grossed $177 million – almost $35 million below “Iron Man 2.” although to be fair, the original had debuted much lower ($98 million) and had also dropped only 48% in its second weekend on its way to $318.4 million. at its current trajectory, box office prognosticators are expecting “Iron Man 2” to end up somewhere in the $350-$375 million range – making it a strong contender for the title of 2010’s Highest Grossing Film. However, since many had originally expected the superhero picture to end up with a final gross in the $400 – $450 million range, both “Toy story 3” and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” now have the potential to overtake “Iron Man 2” when they debut next month.

Director Ridley Scott’s very dull reinvention of “Robin Hood” (Movie Review) starring the very serious Russell Crowe was the weekend’s best newcomer, debuting to the tune of a good, not great $37.1 million in second place. while the picture didn’t open on top of the box office in the United States, it did perform considerably well abroad. Considering that the film cost an estimated $220 million to produce, the execs at Universal Studios are hoping the cash registers abroad keep flowing as it’s unlikely to do the same in the States after word-of-mouth kicks in. Reviews for the historical drama have ranged from negative to mixed at best and worse, word-of-mouth has been venomous; According to box office website BoxOfficeMojo.com, “Robin Hood” earned a poor B- average from audiences polled on Friday night, indicating that it’s going to be a tough road ahead for lads of Sherwood Forest. its performance next weekend will decide whether or not it will be able to cross past the $100 million mark.

Debuting in a distant third place with $13.75 million was the romantic drama “Letters to Juliet” (Movie Review) starring Amanda Seyfried which Summit Entertainment positioned as good counterprogramming to the macho men battle between Robin Hood and Iron Man. As expected, Cinemascore surveyed that about 81% of the film’s audience was female. while reviews were generally mixed, word-of-mouth for the picture has been very good – Both Yahoo Movies and Cinemascore users gave it an A- average which indicates that the film will likely have a good two-week run until the arrival of the “Sex and the City” girls on May 27.

The weekend’s third newcomer, the romantic comedy “Just Wright” starring Queen Latifah and Common, was the weakest link of the newbies as it only managed to gross $8.5 million for the weekend. But since it played in significantly fewer theaters than the other two new releases, maybe comparing its performance isn’t being fair. However, with “Letters to Juliet” receiving strong word-of-mouth and the aforementioned “Sex and the City 2” arriving in a fortnight, expect this one to be written-off as an also-ran. it should make back its budget on DVD though so look out for it there.

Rounding off the top five was spring season audience favorite “How to Train your Dragon” which has now spent an amazing eight weekends in the top five. The critically acclaimed Dreamworks animated film added another $5.1 million to its booty to take its total to $207 million. with the studio’s flagship franchise closer “Shrek Forever After” debuting next week, expect “Dragon” to complete its ultra-successful box office run in the next two weeks with a final tally of over $215 million domestically. Not bad for a movie that was originally written-off as a disappointment when it opened below most expectations.

Not much to report on the bottom five of the top ten as it was populated by holdovers from the month of April. Leading the way in sixth and dropping 48% from last weekend was the horror remake “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (Movie Review) with $4.7 million. The Freddy Krueger show has slashed $56 million to date so a sequel isn’t out of the question. Whether audiences are in the mood for another “Nightmare” is a question for another day.

A pair of romances took in seventh and eight. “Date Night” (Movie Review) starring Steve Carrell and Tina Fey laughed off with another $4 million for the weekend while Jennifer Lopez’s “The Back-Up Plan” (Movie Review) pulled in $2.4 million. their cums stand at $86 million and $34 million respectively.

Rounding out the top ten were the Brendan Fraser bomb “Furry Vengeance” with $2.3 million and the 3-D action picture “Clash of the Titans” (Movie Review) with $1.2 million.

NEXT WEEK: The most successful animated franchise in cinema history comes to a close with “Shrek Forever After.” like its predecessors, this one too should have no problem becoming a huge hit, especially since 3-D prices are going to be tacked on this time. Also opening will be the SNL raunchy comedy “MacGruber” a spoof of the 80s television show “MacGyver” starring Will Forte and Val Kilmer. although the trailers look funny, I’m afraid that its box office potential will be limited to hardcore SNL fans only. As usual, I shall be posting my reviews of “Shrek Forever After” and “MacGruber” on Thursday and Friday respectively. keep a lookout for those.

With the affidavit filed in connection with the search warrant for the ‘lost’ iPhone raid having been made public on Friday, new details have surfaced about what the San Mateo, California, County Superior Court Judge Clifford Cretan was informed when he ordered the raid.

The warrant, issued by Judge Cretan on April 23, essentially came as a result of Apple claims that tech blog Gizmodo’s April 19 ‘leak’ of the iPhone 4G prototype was “immensely damaging” to the company.

The ‘lost’ iPhone saga began when Apple engineer Robert ‘Gray’ Powell accidentally left his fourth-generation iPhone in a Redwood City, California bar, from where it was picked by the 21-year-old Brian Hogan. In order to get the ‘best price’ for Apple’s upcoming handset, Hogan shopped the device around and finally sold it to Gizmodo.

Gizmodo reportedly promised to pay Hogan $8,500 for the device – $5,000 up front; and $3,500 as a bonus in case the handset actually turned out to be the iPhone Apple is unveiling this summer. The sale was reported to Apple by Hogan’s roommate, Katherine Martinson, who wanting to avoid getting into trouble.

With Apple lawyers reiterating the damage that the leak would cause to the sales of the current iPhone model, Judge Cretan issued a search warrant, and law enforcement authorities raided the Fremont home of the Gizmodo editor Jason Chen – the man behind the iPhone scoop!

“We’ve improved our capability to compete in high usage, higher-value segments of the market,” CEO Paul Curlander told analysts during the company’s recent earnings conference call. “And despite our expense reductions, we’ve continued to invest significantly in our core print technology and product development and are driving a strong pipeline of future Lexmark products.”

And others are beginning to take notice, too. A year ago, shares of Lexmark’s stock were trading regularly below $20. now the stock is about $40.

Also, Moody’s recently upgraded the company’s credit outlook, which forecasts what moves the credit rating agency might make, calling it “stable” instead of “negative.”

Lexmark’s pipeline of products has shown in the inkjet division, as Lexmark has released higher-end products with features like touchscreens and high degrees of customization. Many come with various functions like scanning and copying and appeal to people who use lots of ink.

Those products replace a legacy of low-end devices that Lexmark has sought to distance itself from in recent years. The company walked away the past few years from significant portions of its former inkjet customers, people who bought printers sold for nearly nothing or bundled in with PCs for free.

For example, in 2006, Lexmark sold 14.7 million inkjet printers. in 2009, it sold just 4.2 million.

It may sound like a surprising move, but many of those 14.7 million customers didn’t print enough to give the company the sales of ink it needed to meet profit expectations. in contrast, the 4.2 million printers sold in 2009 boast features that aim at high-usage customers.

But that move has brought financial pain, as year-over-year sales for the inkjet division have fallen each quarter since the second quarter of 2005. Sales declines have ranged anywhere from 4 percent in the third quarter of 2005 to as high as 28 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008.

It’s now on the low end of those year-over-year declines, and Tom Carpenter, vice president and senior equity analyst at Hilliard Lyons in Louisville, said the company is “moving in the right direction” and has “stabilized inkjet.”

As evidence, while printer hardware revenue fell 2 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, the average revenue from that inkjet hardware rose 28 percent as customers bought more of the high-end products.

The company has aimed squarely at small businesses with many of its offerings and succeeded last year in dramatically expanding its shelf space at office superstores including Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax.

Todd Hamblin, Lexmark’s vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for the inkjet division, said that’s paid off. in those stores, Lexmark has doubled its market share from 5 percent to 10 percent for printers costing above $100.

In doing so, it passed Epson, Canon and Brother and now trails only HP.

“What that has opened up for us is more opportunities,” he said. “We’re really happy about our progress, but we’re even more excited about the future.”

Carpenter said he expects Lexmark to soon begin seeing a modest year-over-year increase in inkjet printer shipments.

“And as they obtain more shelf space, you’ll see sales of cartridge supplies increase as well,” he said.

While the company’s laser printer division hasn’t seen the major revenue declines of its inkjet counterpart, it has undergone its own shift to higher-end products, too.

The company has focused on selling more color lasers and laser multi-function products, which see more toner usage and are categories that have seen higher growth rates compared to others.

In the first quarter, laser hardware revenue soared 27 percent and average unit revenue rose 12 percent, as businesses bought more higher-end products.

“Our mix has shifted to these workgroup products, which drives higher average unit revenue for our hardware and we expect over time will drive more demand for” toner, said Keith Jones, vice president of worldwide marketing for the laser division.

In the first quarter, the division saw a strong growth rate in toner sales, too.

“What we want to flesh out in 2010 is how much of the supplies increase is with distributors,” Carpenter said. “Are distributors carrying more supplies because they’re carrying more of Lexmark’s products, or is the increase in supplies driven more by increased usage?

“It’s probably a combination, but if it’s more of the latter, which is Lexmark’s goal, then that’s evidence that their strategy and restructurings are paying dividends.”
